About Chuy

Chuy grew up in Jalisco, Mexico. He says, “We used horses, donkeys, and mules for everything growing up. I fell in love with these beautiful animals, and I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in the horse industry.” His father, Eduardo Chavez, moved to the states when Chuy was a teenager and worked very hard to get his family to the United States. Eventually, the entire family made their arrival to the states and Chuy was able to pursue his dream as a horse trainer. His family is the definition of The American Dream.

My Story

Upon his arrival to the States, Chuy worked closely with his friend, Miguel Lomeli. Miguel
introduced Chuy to the performance horse industry. He taught Chuy the value of learning from
established horse trainers. “Be fast to listen, and slow to talk.” He offered Chuy guidance and
support to chase his dreams.

Chuy was then introduced to the Warwick Schiller Horsemanship Program. Warwick and Chuy
worked together for many years. Learning the foundation of performance horses, starting colts,
and reining maneuvers. He says “My first reining spin and sliding stop on such a powerful
animal, I knew that was it for me. Reining became my passion instantly”. He spent years
studying the industry and Chavez Performance Horses began in 2015.

Since then, Chuy Chavez has made the finals at every major National Reining Horse Association
event. Including the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby and the National Reining Breeders Classic. He
also has a successful Non-Professional Coaching Program. He enjoys coaching his clients and
seeing their success. He says, “I am forever grateful for the clients that believe in me with their
horses to pursue my dream, and I am honored to return what they have done for me, to them. I
love being a part of my non-pro’s success at Chavez Performance Horses.”

After many years of Reining success, Chuy began his career in the National Reined Cow Horse
Association in 2022. His best friend, Justin Wright, encouraged Chuy to try something new. As
the NRCHA has Reining as part of the event, Chuy gave it a try. In his first year in this event, he
became the NSHA Limited Open Cow Horse Hackamore Champion. If anybody knows the
Cowhorse events, Chuy was hooked and began to be a National Reined Cowhorse Association
Professional Trainer as well as a Professional Trainer in the National Reining Horse Association.
He began a partnership with Justin in 2023 and spent a year studying the event and spent day-in
and day-out perfecting the sport. Chuy will participate in his first National Reined Cowhorse
Association Futurities in 2024 and hopes open the doors for Non-Pro Reined Cowhorse clients
as well.

Chuy is unwavering in his dedication to his horses and clients, knowing that achieving his
lifelong dreams is a challenging but relentless pursuit.
